About the Artist
Mia began her art journey seriously during recovery after surgery in late 2014, but has always had a love for and a hand in, art and the arts since childhood.
She is mainly self-taught, works with oil paints but also charcoal sketches and dabbles in sculpting out of mixed materials, resin and miniature busts in Polymer Clay. She has a contemporary classical style, although steps into the abstract at times. Her love of people and animals and their different characters drive her to seek out faces to paint and draw. Mia tries to bring out what is unique in each subject all the while staying true to their likeness, this also goes for her abstract pieces.
Background
Although she spent most of her life in Australia after migrating with her parents as an adolescent, she has as of 2023 returned to her country of birth Sweden. Before migrating, Mia grew up on Färingsö, one of the islands of Stockholm, as well as Småland in Sweden's south, and spent most of her time near or on the water. Her ties with nature, light and water has a tendency to inform her work whether she is doing portraits, still lives or landscapes.
Education and Professional Development
Mia has done some short course work with the esteemed Australian and local artists and teachers Geoff Dupree and Ignacio Rojas at Melbourne Studio of Art in Elsternwick, Melbourne AUS, as well as attended a weekend art retreat with visiting Korean-American artist master Zin Lim also whilst in Melbourne AUS, and studied a Fine Arts Degree (Painting Major) at Curtin University, Australia.
Exhibitions and Memberships
Mia has been an active member of the NRAAA (National Registry of Australian Art and Artists), MAVA (Melbourne and Victorian Artists Inc), ArtAviso, and has exhibited at the Camberwell Art Show 2018, RAW Artists Melbourne Oct 2018, The Mornington Art Show 2019, ArtAviso 'VitroForm' Exhibition at Lord Coconut, Melbourne Fringe Festival 2019, as well as MAVA 'MANIFEST' Exhibition at 345AC Gallery 2019, amongst others, and upon her return to Sweden the Kungsör Christmas Exhibition 2024.
Artistic Approach
Mia's work spans multiple mediums including oil painting, charcoal drawing, resin art, mixed media, and polymer clay sculpture. Her contemporary classical style is informed by her deep connection to nature and her sensitivity to light, water, and the unique characteristics of her subjects. Whether creating portraits that capture individual essence, still lives that explore form and composition, or abstract pieces that push creative boundaries, Mia remains committed to bringing out what is unique in each work while staying true to its authentic nature.
